Life often brings experiences that make us feel stuck. We become stuck in memories, stuck in heavy emotions, or stuck in lies. These places of feeling stuck and feeling pain can affect our relationships or our quality of life. In these painful, confusing, or hopeless moments there are often questions: will this ever change or get better? or am I alone in this? Through individual therapy, we can discover new possibilities that open to healing, to freedom, and to a movement into wholeness. Individual therapy is a way to heal from trauma, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, abuse, relationship pain, or hopelessness.
Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach. Developed in 1987, EMDR is a therapy that has been extensively researched, is evidenced based, and is recognized internationally as an effective therapy for trauma, as well as multiple other experiences such as panic, grief, anxiety, abuse, depression, or addiction. EMDR is recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Department, and the Department of Defense as an evidence based and effective treatment for trauma. EMDR can only be practiced by mental health professionals who are licensed or eligible to be licensed.
EMDR is a therapy approach that uses knowledge of neuroscience and how the brain processes memories and experiences. When negative experiences happen, the brain cannot process them in the same way as it does for normal situations. This results in the brain becoming “stuck” and later these “stuck” places create unresolved emotional, physical, or spiritual pain that can be expressed in a myriad of ways, from difficulty in relationships, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, overwhelming emotions, or negative beliefs about the self, others, or the world, such as, “I am not lovable, I am bad, I am not enough, the world is not safe, others cannot be trusted, etc…” EMDR uses the natural way the brain is oriented towards healing itself and assists the brain’s processing to become “unstuck”, allowing healing, wholeness, and truth to be cultivated to create a more full and free life. Similar to how when there is a wound on your arm, your body will naturally heal its wound. If the cut on your arm has debris or bacteria in it, the wound will become infected and not be able to heal properly. Once the wound or infection is taken care of, cleaned, and bandaged with proper treatment, it will have the environment and ability to continue its natural healing process. Though at times the wound will leave a mark or a scar, there will not be a continual, negative effect from the wound. In the same way, your brain will naturally move towards healing for itself and will do so unless the brain becomes “stuck”. Once the brain is given the environment, space, and tools to heal itself it will be able to continue this natural process. Though the mark or memory of the experience will still be present, the negative experience will not have the continued negative effects on an individual’s quality of life. In individual therapy with EMDR, the environment, space, and tools are given and cultivated for this healing and freedom to come about.
